Mrs. Hess and Mrs. Rose
2nd Grade
We hope your child has lots to tell you about our week because it has been fun and busy!! We are really getting our routines in place, and our classroom is running smoothly. Some conversation starters you can have with your child to hear more about his/her week are:
"Tell me what you remember about the rivers in Georgia." "What does it mean to revise a story? What memory did you write about this week?" "Show me the motions for 'two vowels go walking''. "Tell me what you do during number talks." "What did Mrs. Hess do with play-doh on Friday?" Here are a few highlights from our week: Math: We began our small group routine this week and it went great! Our schedule includes a whole group lesson on Monday to introduce and practice the standard for the week. Tuesday-Thursdays are spent working in centers and small groups with a teacher. On Fridays, we take a quick assessment and play a game to go along with the standard. The students really seem to enjoy working in small groups ,and it helps us to differentiate between various student levels. Reading: We continued guided and independent reading this week. While students were independently reading, they were assigned a task to complete and asked to write their findings on a sticky note. At the end of each Reader's Workshop, students had a chance to share their findings with a partner. Writing: We are working into the narrative genre and practicing the steps of the writing process. Students were taught how to revise and edit their stories. We even practiced these steps with some of our classmates' writing pieces. (thank you Carlos and Dezi for allowing us to work on your stories :)). Next week will work on the following: Math: Skip-counting to 1,000 by 5s, 10s, 100s (the tricky part about this standard is that students should be able to skip count when starting at any number) Ex. Skip count by 5's beginning at 52- 52, 57, 62, 67, etc.. Reading: Main Idea and Details- students will practice reading a non-fiction passage and will find the main idea and supporting details. Writing: Narrative Writing- students will learn the qualities of narrative writing (focuses on one moment or memory; writes in 1st person; has a beginning (hook), middle (details of experience), and end (sense of closure); includes details to describe a character's thoughts, feelings, and actions. Grammar: Irregular and Regular Verbs Social Studies: Native Americans: Creek Indians This week's secret word is: teamwork Have a great weekend! Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rose

Another wonderful week has come to an end!
Here are a few highlights of our week: -Homework is going great! Thank you for signing your child's agenda each night and making sure homework is getting done! As we always say, teamwork is dream work!! -Math: we are becoming very comfortable with 3-digit numbers and writing them in the following ways: standard form, word form, expanded form and drawing base-ten blocks. Each week, your child's math test will come home the following Thursday. Please review anything your child seems to be struggling with and feel free to contact us if you would like additional resources! One thing we have noticed is that some students have a hard time reading 3-digit numbers. You can help at home by making flashcards with various 3-digit numbers and having your child practice reading them. -Reading: Every student chose his/her independent reading spot and we have begun guided reading groups which means that your child is seeing a teacher and working on his/her individual reading level every day in a small group. -Writing: We created a "heart map" and wrote special people and places on it. We then chose one special person or place and wrote about a particular memory. Each day students are chosen to share their stories, and they absolutely love sharing their writing with the class! Some questions to ask your child about his/week include: - What are the four ways to write a number? Which one is your favorite? - Where is your reading spot? What kind of books are in your book-bag? - What special people and places did you add to your heart map? What memories do you have with them? Next week's curriculum includes the following: Math: Comparing 3-digit numbers Reading: Reading is thinking-good readers think about what they are reading and ask questions to check for understanding and comprehension Writing: Introduction to the Writing Process (revising and editing our stories) as well as growing an idea into a story Social Studies: Georgia Rivers and possibly moving on to Native Americans Grammar: Nouns review Phonics: Long and short vowels This week's secret word is plateau. We hope everyone has a fantastic weekend! We will all rest up for another wonderful week ;). Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rose We had another fabulous week!! Thank you so much for attending Open House. It was great to chat with you!! Also, we absolutely loved reading your "A Million Words or Less" words about your precious children! We are so lucky to have each and every one of them in our class and look forward to a great year!
Our sweet 2nd graders have done a fantastic job learning and following our classroom routines and rules. Here's a quick recap of our busy week: Reading/Writing: We introduced the routines of Reader's and Writer's Workshop and practiced building our reading/writing stamina (our class is up to 14 minutes of sustained independent reading). Social Studies: We learned about the five regions of Georgia: Blue Ridge Mountains, Appalachian Plateau, Coastal Plain, Piedmont and Valley & Ridge. Math: We reviewed place value concepts from 1st grade and introduced the hundreds place. From there, we practiced building 3-digit numbers with base-ten blocks and introduced how to draw them using symbols. We also identified the value of various digits in a 3-digit number (Ex. 234- the value of 3 is 30 because it is in the tens place. As you can see, we have been super busy :). If your children are like ours, they spend 8 hours at school and then can't remember anything they did that day (lol). Here are some questions you can ask your child to hear more about their week: - Who is Gooney Bird Greene? -How do you preview a book to decide if it's a good choice for you? -What is the value of 4 in the number 467? -What is the difference between a mountain and a plateau? - Can you give me an example of a blend and a diagraph? - What is the difference between a common and proper noun? Here's a quick look at our curriculum for next week: Reading: Continue building reading stamina and practicing Reader's Workshop routines (students will choose an independent reading spot this week) Phonics: Long & Short Vowels Writing: ELAGSE2W5: With guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing. We will begin working on the narrative writing genre Grammar: Singular and Plural Nouns Math: NBT.2- Show the 4 ways to write a 3-digit number (standard form, expanded form, word form, base ten blocks) Social Studies: Georgia Regions and Georgia Rivers Thanks for reading! Earn a dojo point for your child by writing our special word (*stamina) in his/her agenda! Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rose Our first week was a huge success!! We have an awesome group of students and are looking forward to a fantastic year! This week we spent a lot of time learning the rules and routines of our classroom and being in 2nd grade. Our main focus was building our classroom community and we had so much fun!! Please ask your child about the community building activities we did this week (they will love sharing about how we saved Fred :))
