Thank you for visiting our blog today!!
Here are some conversation starters to have with your child: - "What are the difference between even and odd numbers?" - "Would you rather have a dog or cat as a pet? Tell me why." - "Tell me about one of the Scholastic News articles you read this week?" -"How is your plant growing?" Weekly Curriculum Update: Math- This week we learned the difference between even and odd numbers with various hands-on activities. They seemed to catch on to this concept pretty easily. Two math concepts that several students are still struggling with are counting money and adding/subtracting 3-digit numbers. Please continue to practice these concepts at home. Each student knows which strategy is best for them, so please make sure they practice using that strategy. Grammar- We are working on present and past tense verbs. Science- We have been studying life cycles. Each student planted a bean, and we have been watering and observing them grow. We are also watching the life cycle of a butterfly! Our butterflies are currently in the chrysalis stage. We love watching them each day!! Writing- We reviewed opinion writing and wrote an opinion piece about which pet was better: cat or dog. This piece of writing will be used as an end of the year writing piece. We also let students read their writing from the beginning of the year and discussed all of their progress! Reading- We are continuing to determine the author's purpose in a variety of articles. We are also practicing answering comprehension questions about texts we read to prepare for the end of year DRA which determines the reading level each student will enter 3rd grade on. Secret Words: butterflies We hope you all have a fabulous weekend! :) Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rose

Here are some conversation starters to have with your child: - "What song did you sing to help you remember which way "rows" go? - "Which narrative topic from your spring break did you choose to write about?" - "One reason an author writes is to inform readers. What are two more reasons?" -"What are goods and services? Give me an example of each." Weekly Curriculum Update: Math- This week we practiced partitioning rectangles into equal rows and columns and then counting to see how many units there were in all. This is an introduction to multiplication (arrays). We even practiced writing repeated addition sentences. Your child's test will be coming home next week. They did great with this concept. We will continue this concept next week as well. Students will practice building arrays using objects (skittles, drawing pictures, etc). Grammar- We reviewed prefixes and suffixes. You can review this at home by giving your child a word (ex. drop) and having him/her adding suffixes (dropped, dropping, drops) Social Studies- We reviewed goods and services and will continue this concept next week. Writing- We reviewed narrative writing and wrote a narrative about something that happened over Spring break. This piece of writing will be used as an end of the year writing piece. We also let students read their writing from the beginning of the year and discussed all of their progress! Reading- We talked about an author's purpose and that authors usually write books to inform, entertain, or persuade their readers. We read various types of literature (articles, fiction books) and determined the author's purpose. Secret Words: Braves We hope you all have a fabulous weekend! :) Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rose Than you for visiting our blog today!! As you see from your child's report card, we are so proud of all the progress we have seen from our awesome class this year! We can't believe that there are only 8 more weeks of school left. Please speak with your child about continuing their fantastic behavior and work ethic! Students tend to get Spring fever about this time of year and behavior begins to decline. We still have a lot more to learn and a lot more fun to be had!! We really appreciate your support!
Here are some conversation starters to have with your child: - "What is one thing that you have learned about Jimmy Carter?" - "Name three shapes that are quadrilaterals." - "What favorite thing did you choose to write about? Why is it your favorite?" -"Who is Buttercup and why did he have a hard time walking?" Weekly Curriculum Update: Math- This week we did lots of hands-on activities with shapes. We made 2D shapes with pretzels and marshmallows, and a cube with toothpicks and marshmallows. We learned what shapes are considered polygons, which shapes are considered quadrilaterals and discovered attributes of triangles, squares, rectangles, trapezoids, pentagons, and hexagons. Grammar- This week we introduced possessive nouns and did some partner activities to practice identifying them. Social Studies- We learned about Jimmy Carter and his contributions to our US history. Writing- We wrapped up opinion writing and practiced using a rubric to make sure our pieces meet the writing standards. Reading- We read a Scholastic News about a duck with a backwards foot and how a special solution was created to help the duck walk. We then looked for the main idea in each section, practiced locating answers within the text, and practiced our fluency by reading it with a partner. Next week students will write a letter to you about their opinion on a specific topic (you will love these :)). This assignment will be used as a writing assessment. Reading- We read several fiction books and discussed the author's point of view. Next week we will practice retelling to prepare for a reading assessment for report cards. Next week we will spend more time determining whether a word is an adverb or adjective. Science- We are having so much fun learning about stars! We were so proud of this week's homework assignment and ALL of the knowledge they were able to write about! We have some star experts in our class! :) Writing- Writing was probably a favorite this week since two days included chocolate (yum). We discussed how an opinion piece of writing can be compared to a S'mores. The top graham cracker is your opinion. The marshmallow is one reason to support your opinion along with an example. The chocolate is another reason and example to support your opinion and the last graham cracker is the conclusion where you restate your opinion. We also taste-tested several different pieces of chocolate, used lots of juicy adjectives to describe them, and then chose our favorite. Next week will write an opinion piece on our favorite and do some more opinion writing activities. Reading- We read several versions of Cinderella and compared/contrasted the versions. Next week we will continue this reading a version from the stepmother's perspective (that should be interesting :)). Next we will move to the folktale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
