Here are some conversation starters to hear more about your child's week: - "Tell me one thing you learned about James Oglethorpe this week." - "Were you 'Player of the Day; for First In Math this week?" - "What is your favorite holiday tradition that we have as a family?" - "What is your expert topic? Where are you in completing your procedural piece of writing?" Highlights of our week: Math- We practiced solving two-step word problems (Ex. Frank had 18 popsicles. He gave 5 to his friends in the backyard. He gave 7 to his friends in the front yard. How many popsicles does he have now?) To complete two-step word problems we follow these steps: 1. Read the problem 2. Underline the numbers in the problem 3. Decide whether you are adding or subtracting and write the correct sign above the numbers 4. Write the equation (18-5-7= ?) 5. Solve the first part of the equation (18-5=13) 6. Solve the next part of the equation (13-7=6) 7. Write an answer statement for the final answer: He has 6 popsicles left. *You can help at home by giving your child some two-step problems. Reading- We read a scientific text about creatures that live in leaf piles. This was a very interesting article from Scholastic News. Then students used evidence from the text to answer comprehension questions about the article. Writing- Each student began writing a procedural piece of writing. We each chose an expert topic and listed all of the steps. Next we wrote an introduction, put the steps in sentence form, and added a conclusion. Last we drew a picture to illustrate our steps. We are very impressed with the details the class used in describing how to complete their "expert topic" Next week's Curriculum: Math: Two-step word problems continued with larger numbers Reading: Reading scientific texts and answering questions about the information read Writing: Finish Procedural pieces/Informational writing on family holiday traditions. Social Studies: Goods and Services Secret word of the week: Tradition We hope you all have a fabulous weekend! :) Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rosee We hope everyone had a restful and relaxing week over the break.
Here are some conversation starters to hear more about your child's week: - "Is an inch or centimeter bigger? How many inches are in a foot? How many centimeters are in a meter? How do you think you did on your measurement assessment today?" - "Which 'how-to' topic do you think you are going to write about? Tell me the steps you wrote and let's see if you forgot anything?" - "What reasons did the author of Beavers are Problem Solvers give to prove the point that beavers are problem solvers?" - "Tell me something you learned about Mary Musgrove and Tomochichi." Highlights of our week: Math- We learned about centimeters and meters and how these measurements compared to inches, feet, and yards. We also practiced solving addition and subtraction word problems involving these measurements. We took an asessement on the concepts today so be on the lookout for these, and please go over any questions your child missed. Reading- Students worked on identifying the reasons authors used to support their points. We read some really interesting articles and practiced finding those points together and independently. Please continue to encourage your child to read every night and complete his/her reading log each week. Nightly reading is crucial to your child's reading success! Writing- We are working on procedural (how-to) writing. We kicked off our week by trying to blow a bubble with bubblegum and then write the steps we took to blow the bubbles. We had a lot of laughs during this! And some great bubble blowers as well!! Next, we began making our personal "expert" lists and chose a topic that we are going to focus on next week. Next week's Curriculum: Math: Two-step word problems Reading: Reading scientific texts and answering questions about the information read Writing: Procedural Writing (How-to) Continued Social Studies: James Oglethorpe Secret word of the week: Holiday We hope you all have a fabulous weekend! :) Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rose |
