Mrs. Hess and Mrs. Rose
2nd Grade
We had another fabulous week!! Thank you so much for attending Open House. It was great to chat with you!! Also, we absolutely loved reading your "A Million Words or Less" words about your precious children! We are so lucky to have each and every one of them in our class and look forward to a great year!
Our sweet 2nd graders have done a fantastic job learning and following our classroom routines and rules. Here's a quick recap of our busy week: Reading/Writing: We introduced the routines of Reader's and Writer's Workshop and practiced building our reading/writing stamina (our class is up to 14 minutes of sustained independent reading). Social Studies: We learned about the five regions of Georgia: Blue Ridge Mountains, Appalachian Plateau, Coastal Plain, Piedmont and Valley & Ridge. Math: We reviewed place value concepts from 1st grade and introduced the hundreds place. From there, we practiced building 3-digit numbers with base-ten blocks and introduced how to draw them using symbols. We also identified the value of various digits in a 3-digit number (Ex. 234- the value of 3 is 30 because it is in the tens place. As you can see, we have been super busy :). If your children are like ours, they spend 8 hours at school and then can't remember anything they did that day (lol). Here are some questions you can ask your child to hear more about their week: - Who is Gooney Bird Greene? -How do you preview a book to decide if it's a good choice for you? -What is the value of 4 in the number 467? -What is the difference between a mountain and a plateau? - Can you give me an example of a blend and a diagraph? - What is the difference between a common and proper noun? Here's a quick look at our curriculum for next week: Reading: Continue building reading stamina and practicing Reader's Workshop routines (students will choose an independent reading spot this week) Phonics: Long & Short Vowels Writing: ELAGSE2W5: With guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing. We will begin working on the narrative writing genre Grammar: Singular and Plural Nouns Math: NBT.2- Show the 4 ways to write a 3-digit number (standard form, expanded form, word form, base ten blocks) Social Studies: Georgia Regions and Georgia Rivers Thanks for reading! Earn a dojo point for your child by writing our special word (*stamina) in his/her agenda! Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rose

Thanks ladies! This blog is super informative and helps me feel connected. I am so thankful for the questions you two have included to help hear more about the week. They got McKenzie started and she never stopped! I'm so excited to hear about the weeks to come and look forward to an amazing year ahead. 🤗
