Mrs. Hess and Mrs. Rose
2nd Grade
We definitely had a lot of energy this week as we are VERY excited about Halloween on Monday :).. Thank you for all of your participation with Red Ribbon week!! It was a fantastic and fun week.
Here are some conversation starters to hear more about your child's week: -"Would you rather subtract with a number line or use base ten blocks?" - "Tell me about the non-fiction scavenger hunt you went on this week." - "What topic did you decide you were an expert on?" -"What adjectives did you use to describe the pumpkin you carved as a class?" Highlights of our week: Math- We continued working on subtracting 2-digit numbers using base ten blocks and a number line. Please continue to practice subtraction facts with your child every night. 2nd graders should be able to fluently add and subtract within 20 which means that you can also practice subtracting larger numbers such as 17 - 4 = 13. This seems to be a struggle for some. Reading- We had fun working with non-fiction text features this week. We went on a non-fiction text features scavenger hunt with a partner and made a poster in which we cut out non-fiction text features and labeled them. Look for these in your child's Thursday folder next week. Writing- Each student made a list of topics they feel they are experts in. Then we narrowed down the list to one topic and practiced writing facts about that topic. We also discussed the difference between facts and opinions as this is a difficult concept for 2nd graders to completely grasp. Next week's Curriculum: Math: Word Problems with 2-digit addition and subtraction Reading: Locating Answers to 5 W Questions (who, what, when, where , why) using informational text Writing: Informational writing- Animal research Science: Light and Sound Secret word of the week: pumpkin We hope you all have a fabulous weekend! :) Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rose

Please make sure you are reading every night with your child. A 2nd grader should be reading for at least 20 minutes each night!! If you are having a hard time finding books on your child's level, he/she can also get on www.razkids.com (info is inside the front of agendas). We are so proud of the reading progress we have seen so far and really want it to continue! :)
Here are some conversation starters to hear more about your child's week:
-"Tell me how to write like a scientist. Describe the experiment you conducted during Writer's Workshop this week." - "What is your favorite addition strategy? Which one is the most difficult for you?" - "What is your reading group's play about? Which role are you?" Highlights of our week: Math- We began working on addition strategies this week with numbers within 100. You will receive more information on these strategies at conferences next week. Reading- We practiced reading fluently with our reader's theater. Each reading group is now presenting their play in front of the class. They are super excited about this! Writing- We held our authors celebration this week. We decorated and enjoyed cookies while listening to our classroom author's read their narrative stories. You will get to see your child's awesome writing next week! Next week's Curriculum: Math: Continue addition strategies and begin subtraction strategies Reading: Features of non-fiction texts Writing: Informational writing- Writing Like a Scientist Science: Force and Motion Secret word of the week: experiment We hope you all have a fabulous weekend! :) Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rose Conference Week: Thank you to everyone who signed up for a time slot during conference week. We look forward to meeting with you and sharing all of the wonderful things your child has been doing this year!!
Here are some conversation starters to hear more about your child's week: -"What small moment topic did you choose to publish a piece of writing on?" - "What character traits did you use to describe yourself?" - "What is your favorite season? Tell me something you learned about each season this week?" Highlights of our week: Math- We have been working on solving word problems for the last two weeks. This is a challenging concept, and our students have done amazing with their perseverance!! We will continue to practice solving word problems every day for the rest of the year. Please review your child's math test. If he/she scored a 1, please review the word problems and issues you notice. Thank you for your help!! Reading- We have been working on identifying character traits in fiction books. To bring this concept to life, we took a picture of each child's face, had them draw their body, decorate a background (setting), and list at least 5 character traits about themselves. These will be hanging in our hallway during conference time. They turned out super cute!! Writing- We are wrapping up our narrative writing. This week, we each chose one small moment topic to write about. We took this piece through the writing process (rough draft, revise, edit, publish). Next week, we are planning to have a little author's celebration where each student will read his/her piece in the microphone and we will celebrate our awesome authors. Next week's Curriculum: Math: Addition strategies: adding within 100 using the following strategies: hundreds chart, base ten blocks, expanded form, number line Reading: Readers Theater Writing: Informational writing Science: Seasons Grammar: Verbs Secret word of the week: information We hope you all have a fabulous weekend! :) Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rose |
