Mrs. Hess and Mrs. Rose
2nd Grade
We definitely had a lot of energy this week as we are VERY excited about Halloween on Monday :).. Thank you for all of your participation with Red Ribbon week!! It was a fantastic and fun week.
Here are some conversation starters to hear more about your child's week: -"Would you rather subtract with a number line or use base ten blocks?" - "Tell me about the non-fiction scavenger hunt you went on this week." - "What topic did you decide you were an expert on?" -"What adjectives did you use to describe the pumpkin you carved as a class?" Highlights of our week: Math- We continued working on subtracting 2-digit numbers using base ten blocks and a number line. Please continue to practice subtraction facts with your child every night. 2nd graders should be able to fluently add and subtract within 20 which means that you can also practice subtracting larger numbers such as 17 - 4 = 13. This seems to be a struggle for some. Reading- We had fun working with non-fiction text features this week. We went on a non-fiction text features scavenger hunt with a partner and made a poster in which we cut out non-fiction text features and labeled them. Look for these in your child's Thursday folder next week. Writing- Each student made a list of topics they feel they are experts in. Then we narrowed down the list to one topic and practiced writing facts about that topic. We also discussed the difference between facts and opinions as this is a difficult concept for 2nd graders to completely grasp. Next week's Curriculum: Math: Word Problems with 2-digit addition and subtraction Reading: Locating Answers to 5 W Questions (who, what, when, where , why) using informational text Writing: Informational writing- Animal research Science: Light and Sound Secret word of the week: pumpkin We hope you all have a fabulous weekend! :) Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rose
