Mrs. Hess and Mrs. Rose
2nd Grade
Thank you for visiting our blog and checking out our classroom happenings!!
Here are some conversation starters to hear more about your child's week: - "Tell me one thing you learned about James Oglethorpe this week." - "Were you 'Player of the Day; for First In Math this week?" - "What is your favorite holiday tradition that we have as a family?" - "What is your expert topic? Where are you in completing your procedural piece of writing?" Highlights of our week: Math- We practiced solving two-step word problems (Ex. Frank had 18 popsicles. He gave 5 to his friends in the backyard. He gave 7 to his friends in the front yard. How many popsicles does he have now?) To complete two-step word problems we follow these steps: 1. Read the problem 2. Underline the numbers in the problem 3. Decide whether you are adding or subtracting and write the correct sign above the numbers 4. Write the equation (18-5-7= ?) 5. Solve the first part of the equation (18-5=13) 6. Solve the next part of the equation (13-7=6) 7. Write an answer statement for the final answer: He has 6 popsicles left. *You can help at home by giving your child some two-step problems. Reading- We read a scientific text about creatures that live in leaf piles. This was a very interesting article from Scholastic News. Then students used evidence from the text to answer comprehension questions about the article. Writing- Each student began writing a procedural piece of writing. We each chose an expert topic and listed all of the steps. Next we wrote an introduction, put the steps in sentence form, and added a conclusion. Last we drew a picture to illustrate our steps. We are very impressed with the details the class used in describing how to complete their "expert topic" Next week's Curriculum: Math: Two-step word problems continued with larger numbers Reading: Reading scientific texts and answering questions about the information read Writing: Finish Procedural pieces/Informational writing on family holiday traditions. Social Studies: Goods and Services Secret word of the week: Tradition We hope you all have a fabulous weekend! :) Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rosee
