Mrs. Hess and Mrs. Rose
2nd Grade
Happy Friday!! It was a short week, but a busy one!!
Here are some conversation starters to hear more about your child's week: -"What small moment are writing about? Tell me about the rock you examined during writing this week. " -"Who's face is on the front of the penny? The nickel? The dime?" -"Who were the Cherokee Indians? Tell me three things you learned about them." Highlights of our week: Math- We began to practice counting money (dimes, nickels, and pennies). Students were given a group of coins and had to count the various amounts. This was very difficult for a large portion of our class. You can help at home by giving your child different amounts of change and having him/her practice counting them. We will continue this topic next week as well and can't wait to see the progress we make! Reading- We did a close reading on the text Saving The Whooping Crane and discussed the main idea and details of this book and how the species is endangered . The students were extremely interested in this topic! Writing- We are continuing to focus on choosing a small moment and describing it with LOTS of details. This week, we each picked out a rock from the playground and used our five senses to describe it. Then we created a class list of details used to describe rocks and related this to our writing and the importance of using juicy details to engage the reader. Next week's Curriculum: Math: Counting Money continued and Word Problems with money (dimes, nickels, pennies) Reading: Readers Theater to practice fluency Writing: Narrative Writing Science: Solids, liquids, and gas Grammar: Collective Nouns Secret word of the week: coins We hope you all have a fabulous long weekend! :)Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rose
