We hope everyone had a restful and relaxing week over the break.
Here are some conversation starters to hear more about your child's week: - "Is an inch or centimeter bigger? How many inches are in a foot? How many centimeters are in a meter? How do you think you did on your measurement assessment today?" - "Which 'how-to' topic do you think you are going to write about? Tell me the steps you wrote and let's see if you forgot anything?" - "What reasons did the author of Beavers are Problem Solvers give to prove the point that beavers are problem solvers?" - "Tell me something you learned about Mary Musgrove and Tomochichi." Highlights of our week: Math- We learned about centimeters and meters and how these measurements compared to inches, feet, and yards. We also practiced solving addition and subtraction word problems involving these measurements. We took an asessement on the concepts today so be on the lookout for these, and please go over any questions your child missed. Reading- Students worked on identifying the reasons authors used to support their points. We read some really interesting articles and practiced finding those points together and independently. Please continue to encourage your child to read every night and complete his/her reading log each week. Nightly reading is crucial to your child's reading success! Writing- We are working on procedural (how-to) writing. We kicked off our week by trying to blow a bubble with bubblegum and then write the steps we took to blow the bubbles. We had a lot of laughs during this! And some great bubble blowers as well!! Next, we began making our personal "expert" lists and chose a topic that we are going to focus on next week. Next week's Curriculum: Math: Two-step word problems Reading: Reading scientific texts and answering questions about the information read Writing: Procedural Writing (How-to) Continued Social Studies: James Oglethorpe Secret word of the week: Holiday We hope you all have a fabulous weekend! :) Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rose

Here are some conversation starters to hear more about your child's week: -"Tell me about your in-house Native American field trip today!" - "What animal are researching for your non-fiction book? Tell me one interesting fact you have learned." - "What was your reading group's play about? What part did you play?" Highlights of our week: Math- We began telling time to the nearest five minutes. As you probably noticed with our last minute homework assignment :), this is a tough concept. Please practice telling time with your child as much as possible over the weekend. We know that analog clocks are hard to come by these days, so here are some online games to help: http://www.math-play.com/time-games.html http://www.math-play.com/time-games.html Reading- This was our Reader's Theater week. Each reading group was given a play to practice and have or will perform in front of the class. Our class loves getting the opportunity to practice fluency and perform in front of their classmates!! Writing- Each student chose an animal to research on PebbleGo.com. Next they listed facts under the following headings: Body, Food, Habitat. After that, they wrote the facts in sentence form. Last they created a non-fiction book which included the following non-fiction text features: table of contents, bold words, headings, diagram, photographs, and glossary. They have had so much fun with each step and their finished products are turning out awesome!! Highlights of our week: Math- We continued working on subtracting 2-digit numbers using base ten blocks and a number line. Please continue to practice subtraction facts with your child every night. 2nd graders should be able to fluently add and subtract within 20 which means that you can also practice subtracting larger numbers such as 17 - 4 = 13. This seems to be a struggle for some. Reading- We had fun working with non-fiction text features this week. We went on a non-fiction text features scavenger hunt with a partner and made a poster in which we cut out non-fiction text features and labeled them. Look for these in your child's Thursday folder next week. Writing- Each student made a list of topics they feel they are experts in. Then we narrowed down the list to one topic and practiced writing facts about that topic. We also discussed the difference between facts and opinions as this is a difficult concept for 2nd graders to completely grasp. Next week's Curriculum: Math: Word Problems with 2-digit addition and subtraction Reading: Locating Answers to 5 W Questions (who, what, when, where , why) using informational text Writing: Informational writing- Animal research Science: Light and Sound Secret word of the week: pumpkin We hope you all have a fabulous weekend! :) Mrs. Hess & Mrs. Rose Please make sure you are reading every night with your child. This is a challenging concept, and our students have done amazing with their perseverance!! We will continue to practice solving word problems every day for the rest of the year. Please review your child's math test. If he/she scored a 1, please review the word problems and issues you notice. Thank you for your help!! Reading- We have been working on identifying character traits in fiction books. To bring this concept to life, we took a picture of each child's face, had them draw their body, decorate a background (setting), and list at least 5 character traits about themselves. These will be hanging in our hallway during conference time. They turned out super cute!! Writing- We are wrapping up our narrative writing. This week, we each chose one small moment topic to write about. We took this piece through the writing process (rough draft, revise, edit, publish). Next week, we are planning to have a little author's celebration where each student will read his/her piece in the microphone and we will celebrate our awesome authors. Highlights of our week: Math- We began to practice counting money (dimes, nickels, and pennies). Students were given a group of coins and had to count the various amounts. This was very difficult for a large portion of our class. You can help at home by giving your child different amounts of change and having him/her practice counting them. We will continue this topic next week as well and can't wait to see the progress we make! Reading- We did a close reading on the text Saving The Whooping Crane and discussed the main idea and details of this book and how the species is endangered . The students were extremely interested in this topic! Writing- We are continuing to focus on choosing a small moment and describing it with LOTS of details. This week, we each picked out a rock from the playground and used our five senses to describe it. Reading- We were very interested in finding the main idea and supporting details in our nonfiction texts!! When you are reading with your child at home, (20 minutes each night :)) be sure to discuss the main idea and supporting details. Writing- we wrote memories/moments in our Tiny Topics notebooks and are now working to write a narrative on one of our tiny topics. We are really trying to embrace the idea that every day we experience things we can write about. Some of us are having a hard time coming up with memories/moments. "Tell me what you do during number talks." "What did Mrs. Hess do with play-doh on Friday?" Here are a few highlights from our week: Math: We began our small group routine this week and it went great! Our schedule includes a whole group lesson on Monday to introduce and practice the standard for the week. Tuesday-Thursdays are spent working in centers and small groups with a teacher. On Fridays, we take a quick assessment and play a game to go along with the standard. The students really seem to enjoy working in small groups ,and it helps us to differentiate between various student levels. Reading: We continued guided and independent reading this week. While students were independently reading, they were assigned a task to complete and asked to write their findings on a sticky note. At the end of each Reader's Workshop, students had a chance to share their findings with a partner. Writing: We are working into the narrative genre and practicing the steps of the writing process. Students were taught how to revise and edit their stories. We even practiced these steps with some of our classmates' writing pieces. (thank you Carlos and Dezi for allowing us to work on your stories :)). Next week will work on the following: Math: Skip-counting to 1,000 by 5s, 10s, 100s (the tricky part about this standard is that students should be able to skip count when starting at any number) Ex. Skip count by 5's beginning at 52- 52, 57, 62, 67, etc.. Reading: Main Idea and Details- students will practice reading a non-fiction passage and will find the main idea and supporting details.
